The origin of embroidery

Legend has it that during the reign of King Tai (about the 10th century BC), there were three sons of Duke Danfu: Taibo, Zhongyong and Jili. Among them, Jili's son Ji Chang was the most talented. Duke Danfu wanted to pass the throne to Ji Chang, but according to the inheritance system at that time, he couldn't do so. Taibo and Zhongyong knew this and left for the area around Suzhou, thus enabling Ji Chang to succeed to the throne smoothly. At that time, there was a custom of shaving the hair and tattooing in the area around Suzhou. Despite the great pain, Taibo and Zhongyong followed the local custom and got tattoos on their bodies. Later, when Taibo passed away, Zhongyong found the custom inconvenient. So he called some local leaders to discuss the matter. Coincidentally, Zhongyong's little granddaughter, Nü Gong (pronounced as "gong"), was sewing inside the house and accidentally pricked her hand with a needle, causing blood to flow and form beautiful flowers on her clothes. The little girl had a sudden inspiration and tried to embroider on the clothes according to the local tattoo patterns. After seven days and nights of hard work, she finally made a colorful embroidered dress and presented it to Zhongyong. Zhongyong was overjoyed when he saw it and immediately tried it on. He felt extremely comfortable and realized that it could completely replace the pain of getting tattoos. So he gathered the local residents and changed the custom, no longer getting tattoos but instead using embroidery on clothes. Gradually, this custom of embroidered clothes replaced the custom of tattoos. People were extremely grateful to Nü Gong and called women's needlework such as embroidery "nvgong". Thus, the origin of embroidery can be traced back to about 3000 years ago.
